2MP A series Machine Vision Lenses

OPTOWL FL-CC-A-2M Series High-Resolution Machine Vision Lenses for 2/3" Sensors – 5.39 µm

The OPTOWL FL-CC-A-2M lens series, originally developed by RICOH, is designed for industrial machine vision cameras with 2/3" sensors up to 2 megapixels. The lenses combine high optical resolution with low distortion and are specifically developed for applications requiring good image quality even at short working distances. The series supports a minimum pixel pitch of 5.39 µm and is suitable for both industrial CCD and CMOS cameras.

The optical design delivers sharp images with high contrast while limiting the reduction in resolution and light intensity towards the edges of the sensor. The low optical distortion makes this series particularly suitable for inspection, measurement and positioning applications where the geometry of the captured object is important. Typical applications include the inspection of electronic components, printed circuit boards, mechanical parts and other industrial products.

The series consists of six lenses with focal lengths of 6 mm, 8 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm, 25 mm and 50 mm. The 6 to 25 mm versions have a minimum object distance of only 100 mm, while the 50 mm version can be used from 300 mm. All models feature a standard C-mount and a manually adjustable aperture.

High resolution across the entire image

The OPTOWL FL-CC-A-2M lenses are developed for industrial image processing applications where high image sharpness and good contrast across the entire field of view are important. With a specified minimum pixel pitch of 5.39 µm, determined at 30% contrast at the edge of the optical image field, the lenses are matched to the resolution of 2 megapixel cameras. The optical design limits the loss of sharpness towards the sensor corners, allowing details at the edges of the image to be inspected reliably.

Light fall-off towards the image edges is also limited. This helps maintain more consistent image brightness across the field of view, which is beneficial for inspections using both the centre and outer areas of the sensor. The combination of resolution, contrast and light distribution makes the series suitable for pattern recognition, product inspection, position detection and other industrial image processing applications.

Low distortion and short working distances

An important feature of the FL-CC-A-2M series is its low optical distortion, ranging from 0.02% to a maximum of 0.56%, depending on the lens. This allows the geometry of the captured object to be reproduced with relatively little distortion. This is particularly important for industrial dimensional inspection, accurate positioning and applications where distances or dimensions are determined from camera images. For high-accuracy measurements, camera calibration remains necessary to correct any residual optical distortion.

The lenses are also optimised for short working distances. The 6 mm, 8 mm, 12 mm, 16 mm and 25 mm versions can focus on objects from a distance of just 100 mm. This allows small components and product details to be inspected at close range without necessarily requiring extension rings. The 50 mm version has a minimum object distance of 300 mm and provides a smaller field of view for applications where the camera is positioned further away from the object.

Compact industrial design

The OPTOWL FL-CC-A-2M series is designed for integration into industrial machines and inspection systems. The 12 mm and 16 mm versions feature a compact Ø29.5 mm housing, while the 25 mm and 50 mm versions have a diameter of 32 mm. Due to their optical construction, the 6 mm and 8 mm wide-angle lenses have larger diameters of 48 mm and 42 mm respectively. All models feature a standard C-mount for installation on industrial cameras.

The 6 to 25 mm versions feature a fast F1.4 aperture, adjustable up to F16. The 50 mm version has an aperture range from F2.4 to F22. The high light-gathering capability of the shorter focal lengths is beneficial for inspections requiring short exposure times or where available illumination is limited. Adjusting the aperture allows a balance between light transmission, depth of field and optical performance.

The focus and iris settings can be mechanically secured using locking screws. This prevents unwanted adjustments caused by vibration or during operation in industrial environments. The combination of a short minimum object distance, low distortion and mechanical stability makes this series suitable for both new machine vision systems and the replacement of existing 2 megapixel lenses.
