GigE Vision Cameras
GigE machine vision cameras are widely used in systems where flexibility, cable length, and integration into existing networks are important. By using standard Ethernet infrastructure, distances of up to 100 meters can be achieved, making them suitable for larger machines and production lines. In practice, this means cameras can be integrated without a frame grabber, but bandwidth and data flow become limiting factors for resolution and frame rate.
When multiple cameras operate within the same network segment, available bandwidth must be shared, directly affecting performance and synchronization. Power over Ethernet can simplify cabling, but also introduces constraints on the overall power budget of the system. GigE Vision combined with GenICam ensures broad compatibility with software and hardware from different manufacturers, making systems scalable and vendor-independent.
At the same time, selecting a GigE camera always depends on the overall system design, including optics, lighting, and processing. A well-balanced combination prevents limitations from only becoming apparent during integration or system scaling.
In practice, the final camera selection is determined by the combination of data rate, pixel resolution, and system architecture. A complete breakdown of the camera selection process helps to evaluate these trade-offs systematically.
